Isometric Drawing (AKA Non-Digital Minecraft)

0
A few days ago I posted a video of how we draw isometric drawings in my hands-on geometry class.  Basically, its a 3d representation of a building (or anything) using paper that has offset dots all over it.

Many teachers commented how much their students would enjoy trying something like this, especially since many kids love minecraft & other games built in 3d isometric worlds. So, here’s a few tips & ideas:
Here’s a basic tutorial
If you don’t have paper & blocks available, kids can also create isometric drawings online too:
Isometric Drawing Tool (virtual dot paper for drawing isometric pictures) Isometric Block Builder (build simple 3d shapes with cubic blocks) Or this website allows for building of isometric cities & towns, great for a STEM & social studies connection: Icograms (a 3D isometric map & city builder)
I order centimeter cubes…they’re cheap & versatile.  I’d also suggest putting some into zipper snack bags for quick and easy distribution (or so the kids can borrow some to take home).
Once kids learn how to draw, its amazing what kind of creations they can come up with!
So, let your kids give it a try! If you need help, just ask, I’m always happy to lend a hand! And if your kids draw some amazing things, share them on your favorite social media & tag me @dailystem
